Teeth Whitening: Professional vs At-Home Kits — What Actually Works

“Can you make my teeth whiter?” is probably the most common cosmetic question I get. And because whitening has become such a crowded market — strips, pens, LED kits, charcoal toothpaste, influencer-promoted “natural” methods — patients arrive genuinely confused about what works and what’s safe.

Here’s the honest picture.

First: why teeth discolour in the first place

Teeth can darken for two very different reasons, and the right treatment depends entirely on which category you fall into.

Extrinsic staining is surface staining on the enamel, usually from tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, or certain foods (turmeric, soy sauce, berries). This responds well to cleaning and to whitening.

Intrinsic staining is discolouration from inside the tooth. Common causes are tetracycline antibiotics taken during childhood, fluorosis (excess fluoride during tooth development), trauma to a tooth, or simply natural aging. Intrinsic staining is harder to whiten and sometimes doesn’t respond to whitening at all — veneers may be the better option.

A consultation will tell you which you have. This matters, because if you have intrinsic staining and you use at-home strips for three months, you’ll spend money and gain very little.

Option 1: In-clinic professional whitening (laser / chairside)

What it is: A high-concentration (typically 35-40%) hydrogen peroxide gel is carefully applied to the teeth while your gums are protected with a rubber dam. A specialised light (often called “laser whitening”, though technically LED in most modern systems) activates the gel. The process is repeated in 15-minute cycles over 60-90 minutes.

Results: 4-8 shades lighter in a single 90-minute appointment.

Cost at our Roorkee clinic: ₹6,000 – ₹12,000 depending on the system used.

Pros: Fastest visible result. Done under professional supervision, so gum irritation and sensitivity are minimised. Ideal for weddings, big events, “I have 10 days”.

Cons: The most expensive option. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity for 24-48 hours afterwards. Results fade over 12-18 months depending on your diet.

Option 2: Dentist-supervised take-home kit

What it is: We make custom-fitted trays from impressions of your teeth, and provide a lower-concentration whitening gel (typically 10-16% carbamide peroxide). You wear the trays for 30-60 minutes a day (or overnight for some systems) for 10-14 days.

Results: 3-6 shades lighter across the treatment period.

Cost at our Roorkee clinic: ₹8,000 – ₹15,000 including the custom trays, gel and follow-up.

Pros: Often gives a more gradual, natural-looking result. Custom trays minimise gel contact with gums (which reduces sensitivity). You can top up once a year with a single tray of gel, making this very economical long-term.

Cons: Requires your commitment — daily wear for two weeks. Results develop over weeks, not hours.

For most patients, the take-home option is what I’d actually recommend. It’s gentler, lasts well, and costs less long-term.

Option 3: Over-the-counter strips, pens, and LED kits

This is where most confusion lives, so let me be precise.

Whitening strips (like Crest 3D White) contain 5-10% hydrogen peroxide and do genuinely work — modestly — for surface stains. Expect 1-2 shades lighter after a full course. They’re safe when used as directed, though uneven contact with teeth often produces patchy results.

Whitening toothpastes work primarily through abrasives and surfactants that remove surface stains. They cannot actually change the internal colour of your teeth. Use them for maintenance, not transformation.

Whitening pens are mostly a gimmick. The contact time with teeth is too short for meaningful results.

Budget LED kits bought online can be risky. The gels sometimes contain peroxide concentrations higher than legal limits, can cause severe gum burns, and in a few cases we’ve seen damage the enamel. If the product is under ₹1,500 and promises “professional results”, be skeptical.

Activated charcoal toothpastes and DIY methods (baking soda + lemon, strawberries, oil pulling) either don’t work, or worse, actively damage enamel. Lemon juice in particular is dangerously acidic.

”Will whitening damage my teeth?”

When performed properly, no. Decades of clinical research show that professional whitening does not damage enamel. The gel penetrates into the tooth, breaks down discoloured molecules, and rinses out. The tooth’s structure is unchanged.

What can go wrong: gum irritation if the gel escapes the treatment area (why we use rubber dams and custom trays), and temporary tooth sensitivity (usually 24-48 hours, occasionally longer). Patients with existing sensitivity, recent fillings at the whitening site, or gum recession are more at risk.

What whitening cannot do

It’s worth being clear about the limits.

Whitening will not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding. If you have a front crown, it will stay its original shade while the teeth around it lighten — which can look worse than before. In these cases, we usually plan the whitening first, then replace the crown/veneer to match the new, lighter shade.

Whitening also won’t fix chipped, cracked or poorly-shaped teeth. For those, you’re looking at veneers or bonding, not whitening.

Who shouldn’t whiten

  • Patients under 16 (enamel is not fully mineralised)
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Patients with significant gum disease, untreated cavities, or cracked teeth — treat those first
  • Patients with heavy tetracycline staining (whitening often gives disappointing results; veneers are a better path)

The honest short answer

For most adults in Roorkee who want meaningfully whiter teeth:

  1. Start with a professional cleaning — sometimes that alone does 60% of the job.
  2. For event-driven whitening (wedding, photoshoot), in-clinic laser whitening is hard to beat.
  3. For most people, a dentist-supervised take-home kit gives the best long-term value.
  4. Don’t bother with OTC products for significant change. Use them as maintenance only.
