Can I Get Braces at 40? Or Later?

2 min read Reviewed by the Dantam Dental clinical team

Over a quarter of all orthodontic patients at our Roorkee clinic today are adults — and that number keeps rising. The honest answer to “am I too old?” is no, not at any age, provided your teeth and gums are healthy.

Why adults are choosing braces now

Three reasons:

  • Invisible options exist. Invisalign, ceramic braces, and lingual (behind-the-teeth) braces mean adults don’t have to look like teenagers for a year.
  • Life span is longer. Straightening your teeth at 40 still gives you 40+ years of benefit.
  • Health matters, not just aesthetics. Crooked teeth are harder to clean, which contributes to gum disease, jaw pain, uneven wear, and headaches.

What’s different about adult orthodontics

Adult treatment isn’t harder — it’s just different:

  • Treatment takes slightly longer. Adult jawbone is denser than a teenager’s, so teeth move a little more slowly. Plan for 18–30 months for a full case (vs 12–18 months for a teen), though minor alignment cases can finish in 6–9 months.
  • Gum health must come first. If you have any active gum disease, we treat that thoroughly before starting orthodontics. Moving teeth with inflamed gums risks bone loss.
  • Existing dental work matters. Crowns, bridges, implants — they all affect the treatment plan. We’ll scan everything first.
  • You might need a small amount of enamel reshaping between teeth, or the extraction of a wisdom tooth, to create space.

The health benefits of straightening later in life

Adults who complete orthodontic treatment at 40 typically report:

  • Easier cleaning — less plaque, fewer fillings
  • Less jaw/TMJ pain
  • Better chewing
  • Fresher breath
  • Yes, more confidence in the mirror
