Dental Implants
Is Dental Implant Surgery Painful?
One of the most common fears we hear at our Roorkee clinic is that dental implants must be painful — after all, they involve placing a titanium post into the jawbone. The reality is far less dramatic than the idea.
During the procedure: no pain
Implant placement is done under local anaesthesia — the same kind of numbing injection used for a filling or a root canal. You’ll feel pressure and vibration, but not pain. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels; many tell us they dozed off during the 45–60 minute procedure.
If you’re anxious, we offer:
- Oral sedation — a tablet taken an hour before, making you relaxed but awake
- Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) — gentle, wears off in minutes
- IV sedation — for nervous patients or longer cases, administered by our visiting anaesthetist
The first 48 hours after
You can expect:
- Mild discomfort similar to an extraction
- Some swelling of the gum or cheek (peaks around day 2)
- Occasional pinkish saliva for the first day
- Tenderness on chewing for 3–5 days
Most patients take ibuprofen or paracetamol for 2–3 days and find it more than sufficient. Many patients report implant recovery is actually easier than the tooth extraction that preceded it.
The first week
By day 5–7, most swelling and tenderness has faded. Stitches (if any) are removed at the 7-day review. You can eat soft foods comfortably — dal-rice, khichdi, eggs, paneer, soups, well-cooked pasta.
The months ahead
The titanium post fuses with your jawbone over 3–4 months (osseointegration) — this process is completely painless. You won’t feel it happening. During this period we often fit a temporary tooth so you never go without one.
At 3–4 months we attach the permanent crown, and the tooth is fully functional.
Red flags — when to call
Call us immediately if you experience:
- Severe pain that doesn’t respond to painkillers after day 3
- Fever
- Significant swelling after day 3
- A bad taste or discharge
These are uncommon but mean the site needs attention.
The big picture
Over 98% of our implant patients in Roorkee describe the experience as “much easier than I expected.” Modern implantology — with 3D CBCT planning and surgical guides — has made the procedure remarkably comfortable. The worst part, honestly, is usually the initial anxiety.
