When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

2 min read Reviewed by the Dantam Dental clinical team

Many parents in Roorkee are surprised to hear the answer: by your child’s first birthday — or within six months of the first tooth appearing, whichever comes first.

That sounds very early. Here’s why we recommend it.

What a first visit is really about

The first visit isn’t about “fixing” anything. Your child almost certainly won’t need treatment. It’s about:

  • Checking healthy development — that teeth are erupting in the right order and gums are healthy.
  • Catching early problems before they hurt. Baby-bottle tooth decay can start before age 2 and is almost always preventable.
  • Personalised advice — when to stop the bottle, how to brush tiny teeth, whether to use fluoride toothpaste, and how to handle thumb-sucking or pacifier use.
  • Getting your child comfortable with the dental chair. Children who have their first positive visit as toddlers rarely develop dental anxiety as adults.

What actually happens

At Dantam Dental we keep first visits short and friendly:

  • A brief chat with the parent (5–10 min)
  • Child sits on parent’s lap while we gently count teeth and examine the gums (5 min)
  • Fluoride varnish application if needed (2 min, painless)
  • A sticker, a balloon, a positive memory

Total time: 15–20 minutes. Cost: ₹500 for a child check-up.

Red flags that mean “book now, not later”

Please don’t wait for the first birthday if your child shows any of these:

  • Brown or white spots on any tooth
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
  • A small “pimple” on the gum
  • Refusing food because of pain
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or chipped (this is an emergency — call us immediately)
  • Thumb-sucking beyond age 4

How to prepare your child

Use simple, positive language: “The dentist counts your teeth and helps you keep them strong.” Avoid words like pain, drill, or injection. Don’t say “it won’t hurt” — that plants the idea that pain is a possibility. Just make it sound normal and friendly.

At Dantam Dental Solutions we have a dedicated paediatric-friendly chair and toys, and we welcome parents to stay right beside their child throughout. Book early — the habit of dental check-ups is the single best dental gift you can give your child.
